Our Areas of Expertise
"ÇEVKO Foundation Talks" continue at full speed this year as well. The third of the talks prepared by the ÇEVKO Foundation Climate Change and Working Group, organized in cooperation with the Association of Economics Journalists Global Warming Convention Committee, was held under the title of Climate Change and Sustainability Studies of Leading Industrial Organizations in Turkey. In the online talk moderated by the Chairman of the Association of Economics Journalists (EGD) High Advisory Board, Celal Toprak, and attended by ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer; the practices of PINAR Water and Beverage, MEY DIAGEO and NESTLE WATERS-Erikli were shared. This month’s guests of the talk were PINAR Water and Beverage R&D Manager Burcu Günal Emir, MEY DIAGEO Health Safety Environment Manager Çinel İşlek Güncü, and NESTLE WATERS-Erikli Marketing Director Can Emci.
At the opening of the online meeting, EGD High Advisory Board Chairman Celal Toprak emphasized the importance of the pioneering role undertaken by industrial organizations with high environmental awareness in the fight against the climate crisis, and gave the first word to ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer.
ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer stated that the sustainability and climate change activities of industrial organizations responsible for different sectors were shared within the scope of the ÇEVKO Foundation Talks, and underlined the importance of these talks that create awareness, emphasizing that immediate action must be taken:
"We have been organizing these conferences together with EGD for more than two years. Last month, there was also a climate-related conference in Izmir, again organized by EGD, and all these talks and conferences are of great importance in terms of raising awareness. Taking action is as important as raising awareness. Very little time is left. Climate change has become a crisis. Industrial organizations are not standing still either, they are implementing very successful projects in this regard. We are realizing our meetings this year in order to motivate other stakeholders and reveal the work carried out by the industry in this regard. Today, we are together with leading industrial organizations from the water and beverage sector. Of course, we also talk about transition to the circular economy, we talk about the importance of production without waste. Ecodesign is highly on the agenda. The fact that all packaging can be recycled, and be included back into the process as recyclable material is at the forefront of all efforts. Industrialists play an active role in the process of collecting waste and bringing it into recycling. Extended Producer Responsibility is not a foreign concept to us. We actively fulfilled it in our country for 15 years (2005-2020), we carried out these activities. Now it has become even more important, as the EU has transitioned to a circular economy. With the Green Deal, thinking of both the Climate Crisis and the Circular Economy together and for companies exporting to Europe from our country to comprehend and adapt to this is extremely important. In this respect, I thank our industrial organizations and participants who joined our meeting."
“Take Good Care of the Environment” Mission from PINAR Water and Beverage
PINAR Water and Beverage R&D Manager Burcu Günal Emir gave information about the sustainability activities of Pınar Water and Beverage, one of the Yaşar Holding companies:
"As Yaşar Holding, we have had a mission and vision since the 60s. As Pınar Water and Beverage, we attach great importance to this mission and vision. It is possible to categorize as first our consumers and customers, then our operational excellence, our human resources, our ethical stance, our environmental and social responsibility. Within the scope of the 17 basic principles of sustainability, we try to ‘Take Good Care’ of our consumers, our environment, our producers, and our employees. What does “Take Good Care of the Environment” mean? We are working to measure environmental impact, improve it, and contribute to the protection of our natural resources. Following international developments and serving the sustainable development goals in the business areas of our community are among our biggest duties. When our Group says “Take Good Care of the Environment”, it considers water management, energy and climate change, and waste management as the three main principles. We implement the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System in each of our companies and facilities. ISO 50001 Energy System is applied in the fight against energy consumption and Climate Change. Studies continue in one of our companies. The Yaşar Group is carrying out all sustainability efforts to contribute to Turkey’s goal of becoming Carbon Neutral by 2053. At the same time, Climate Change and Water Reports are prepared every year for our stakeholders by adopting good practice, measurement, and evaluation methods of the Carbon Transparency project in our publicly traded companies within the Group. We are a signatory of the UN Global Compact. We are also one of the first signatories of the Business World Plastics Initiative established under the leadership of TÜSİAD, SKD and Global Compact Turkey."
PINAR Water and Beverage R&D Manager Burcu Günal Emir also explained the work they carried out on water management and the use of renewable energy sources:
"As Pınar Water and Beverage, we package less than 1 percent of fresh water because we prioritize food safety, and work to ensure that consumers have access to healthy water. Throughout the entire process, we are also reducing our water footprint. While approximately 58 million liters of wastewater were generated in 2018, today this rate (2021) is 19 million. While water efficiency was 95 percent (2020) in our three facilities, it is currently 96 percent. The amount of wastewater per unit production decreased by 25 percent compared to the previous year. We are working to reduce the amount of wastewater in all of our facilities. As the Group moves towards carbon neutral in 2050, we are also working on energy savings and climate change. We question how we can use energy in the most efficient way. We are lucky because we have an energy producer like DESA Enerji. We receive support for the installation of renewable energy sources and benefiting from these sources. Our greenhouse gas emission values have been stable since 2019... We also have a Carbon Neutral certificate. We attach great importance to Waste Management, particularly in ‘pet’. Along with the packaging optimization and simplification projects that continued in 2021, the use of Polyethylene Terephthalate was reduced by 15.9 percent in certain product groups. The total Polyethylene Terephthalate used in all product groups decreased by 8.47 percent in 2021 compared to the previous year. I should also add that a reduction of 11.8 percent was achieved in polyethylene usage compared to the previous year. Pınar Water and Beverage certifies waste management activities in all production facilities with the Zero Waste Certificate. We are doing serious work, including on hazardous waste. While the total non-hazardous waste ratio was 525.90 tons in 2019, this rate was 646.18 tons in 2021. The overall total was 945.75 tons in 2019 and recorded as 1,162.64 tons in 2021."
The Mission of MEY DIAGEO: “Leading Sustainability from Seed to Glass”
MEY DIAGEO Health Safety Environment Manager Çinel İşlek Güncü provided important information about Mey Diageo’s sustainability approach:
"Mey Diageo is a farmer company. We are based on agriculture, and we are also industrialists. Our mission is to transfer the legacy of the past to the next generations. Therefore, sustainability is indispensable for us in every area. That’s why we say ‘Sustainability from Seed to Glass’. We have vineyards and production facilities, as well as sales offices, in many regions of Turkey. Our sustainability journey started in 2007. We started the first works to reduce our carbon footprint in 2007. In 2011, product carbon footprint calculation began. In 2019, we became a Global Compact signatory. In 2021, we published our first sustainability progress report. We also published it a month ago in 2022. We have implemented 320 projects between 2017-2020, and 67 projects in 2021. The top five SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) we contribute to can be listed respectively as follows: Responsible Production and Consumption, Decent Work and Economic Growth, Climate Action, Life on Land, Sustainable Cities and Communities. There are also many topics in our “Ecosystem 2030: The Spirit of Progress” approach. Responsible Consumption, Inclusion, Biodiversity, Greenhouse Gas Emissions, etc… By 2030, with carbon neutral efforts, we aim to achieve net zero carbon in all our operations, to reduce our share in suppliers’ carbon rates by 50 percent by cooperating with them, to meet all electricity requirements during production 100 percent from renewable sources, and these are among our net zero carbon targets. Since 2007, we have reduced our greenhouse gas emissions. We use electricity generated from renewable energy. In Alaşehir, Nevşehir and Tarsus, we obtain part of the energy we need from biogas and biomass produced. With the work we carry out, we use less fossil fuel."
MEY DIAGEO Health Safety Environment Manager Çinel İşlek Güncü also explained how they implemented projects spread across Turkey regarding water use:
"Until 2016, in all our regions experiencing water scarcity, we returned more water to nature than we used for every beverage we produced; until 2030, we aim to use 40 percent less water for every beverage we produce compared to today; and we aim to carry out social responsibility projects across the entire country, from increasing water quality to improving access to sanitation and hygiene. Until now, we have ensured the reuse of water in production, and signed important projects such as reusing the clean water treatment unit backwash waters and reusing the effluent water of the wastewater treatment plant in the treatment plant polymer unit. In 2021, water-stressed regions were identified and projects to replace all the water taken from nature in these regions accelerated. We called it resource efficiency and described it as water replacement. We carried out studies with municipalities, public institutions, and universities. Our recent water gain projects are the Şahyar drip irrigation project in Manisa; university green area irrigation project in Nevşehir; and perlator investment in Tarsus, Alaşehir and Acıpayam. In addition, reaching zero waste in places with direct operations, making all our packaging 100 percent recyclable, increasing the recyclable material content in our packaging up to 60 percent, achieving a 10 percent reduction in total packaging weight, and supporting farmers receiving regenerative agriculture training are also among our goals. We have zero waste in all facilities. We obtain steam from anise pulp. While grape pomace is used as animal feed, grape stems are converted back into energy as fertilizer production from compost or via biomethanization/ fuel. For the first time in Turkey, brick production raw material (
