Preparations for the COP29 Climate Summit to be Held in Baku Have Begun

Especially the focus will be on providing the necessary financing for developing countries to transition to clean energy technologies.
Preparations and importance of COP29
Fatih Birol, in his statements within the scope of the preparations for the COP29 Climate Summit, emphasized that financing will play a critical role in the transition of developing countries to clean energy technologies. He stated that COP29, which will be held in Baku on 11-22 November 2024 this year, will be a platform for taking important steps in energy transformation.
Renewable energy and climate commitments
At COP28 held in the United Arab Emirates last year, targets were set to triple renewable energy capacity and double energy efficiency by 2030. These commitments have become a global agreement, accepted by approximately 200 countries. At COP29, the focus will be on developing and financing similar commitments.
Turkey's renewable energy potential
Fatih Birol stated that Turkey can play an important role in the renewable energy supply chain and has taken serious steps in this field. He said that Turkey can increase its renewable energy capacity by 60% in the next five years and that most of this growth will come from solar and wind energy. He also stated that Turkey has taken important steps in the field of geothermal energy.
The necessity of climate finance
It is stated that current financing must be tripled in order to realize clean energy investments worldwide. There are great difficulties in financing renewable energy projects in regions such as Africa, Latin America and Asia. Support from international financial institutions is needed to facilitate access to renewable energy technologies for countries in these regions.
Global energy crisis and transition to clean energy
Fatih Birol stated that the current global energy crisis has accelerated the transition to clean and safe energy. Stating that there is a serious revival and growth in renewable energy technologies, Birol stated that there are four main reasons for this situation, such as energy supply security, high fossil fuel prices, long-term clean energy policies and the fight against climate change.
First high-level energy transition dialogue
Earlier this year, the first High-Level Energy Transition Dialogue organized by the COP29 Presidency and the IEA was held in Paris. More than 70 energy and climate leaders from around the world attended the meeting. At the meeting, it was discussed how to implement the energy commitments made at COP28 and how to achieve the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C. Participants emphasized the importance of providing financial support to the energy transition in developing countries.
Birol's visit to Azerbaijan
Fatih Birol will meet with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on June 3, before COP29. This visit will focus on how the successes achieved at COP28 can be carried forward at COP29 and Azerbaijan's role in the clean energy transformation. Birol stated that these meetings will contribute to taking important steps in providing climate finance.
