SHURA Energy Conversion Center Director Alkım Bağ Güllü said, "Currently, within the scope of the EU's 'Fit for 55' agreement, 5.6 million tons of green hydrogen production is envisaged by 2030. He said that Türkiye has a high clean energy production quality among European countries in the production of 'clean energy' and that it can produce clean energy more competitively compared to other regions in terms of cost.
Reminding that the EU Commission published the joint action plan called "REPowerEU" at the beginning of March, Güllü said, "Currently, within the scope of the EU's 'Fit for 55' agreement, 5.6 million tons (Mt) of green hydrogen production is envisaged by 2030. Within the scope of the REPowerEu action plan, an additional 15 million tons of green hydrogen production is targeted, thus replacing the annual 25 to 50 billion cubic meters of natural gas purchased from Russia." It is stated that it can be done.” he said.
Güllü stated that these new targets go beyond the EU's hydrogen strategy targets before the Russia and Ukraine crisis.
Güllü pointed out that one of the most important elements in reducing natural gas imports for the EU within the action plan is the maximum use of electrification opportunities, and said:
"In this context, the widespread use of heat pumps takes its place as the priority strategy in decarbonizing the heating sector. The use of hydrogen in heating is also offered as an alternative. The EU aims to install 10 million heat pumps in the next 5 years and thus prevent the import of 12 billion cubic meters of natural gas. While 5 million tons of the 15 million tons of green hydrogen target is aimed to be produced within Europe, the remaining 10 million tons is planned to be imported from other 'neighboring' countries. "After the Russia-Ukraine tension, the EU's efforts to increase energy efficiency, invest in more renewable energy and create a hydrogen market have accelerated. Considering the renewable energy potential, Turkey is a region with high energy resources such as green hydrogen, wind and solar. It is thought that a certain part of the EU's green hydrogen need can be met from Türkiye."
"Hydrogen will play an important role in the energy system of the future"
The Oil and Gas Director of the Association of Energy Companies of the Mediterranean Countries, Chat Karbuz, stated that hydrogen will play an important role in the energy system of the future for two main reasons, as a raw material and energy carrier in addition to electricity.
Karbuz stated that cost-effective solar and wind energy can be put into use wherever desired, and added, "In addition, sectors that seem difficult to decarbonise, such as industry, transportation and buildings, will be decarbonized over time. Here, it is assumed that the cost of hydrogen production - which is largely determined by the cost of energy - will reach a competitive level in the future." He made his assessment.
Karbuz stated that the fact that hydrogen can be transported and stored through pipelines and that it can be mixed with natural gas to a certain extent in existing pipelines increases the attractiveness of hydrogen in the energy sector, and said:
"Hydrogen, which is currently used as a raw material in the chemical and petrochemical industry, will be used as a raw material in new areas such as steel and synthetic fuel production in the future, and as an energy carrier in some other sectors. Hydrogen is seen as the fuel of the future. It was seen as the fuel of the future in the same way 50 years ago. It is thought that problems such as the lack of a proper hydrogen market, the extremely inadequate regulation on issues such as quality and safety, and the absence of an international certification system will be overcome over time. There are rosy dreams about the transition to hydrogen and the hydrogen economy." "It is being explored and thought to be a panacea. Just like 50 years ago. But the difference is that this time it is imagined that we will enter the hydrogen economy and a decarbonized energy system in the next 10-20 years. This picture already emerges when the European Commission's hydrogen strategy is read."
