Our Areas of Expertise
According to the answers given by individuals to questions about the recycling and environmental impact of packaging waste in the ÇEVKO Foundation "GREEN DOT Perception Survey", individuals think that packaging waste is collected separately in workplaces. While the rate of those who say that they always collect packaging waste separately at home is 58%, the rate of those who say that they never separate it is 19%. Participants indicate that the reasons for not collecting separately are that there is not enough space at home for them to save, that they do not see collection being made, and that they do not know how to separate. 20 million people report that they have difficulty using recycling bins in social media, and that the images and explanations on the bins are confusing. The primary behaviors that individuals care about in terms of environmental impact are using water carefully and choosing energy-saving and recyclable products. Work on the development of children, protection of forests and improving the living conditions of stray animals are the areas where the most support is given.
The results of the "GREEN DOT Perception Survey" conducted by the ÇEVKO Foundation during the year were announced in terms of the perception and behavior of individuals in Turkey about the recycling and environmental impact of packaging waste.
ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer stated that the "GREEN DOT Perception Research" was carried out in cooperation with ZENNA Research by interviewing 1,000 people aged 18 and over across Turkey, in 26 provinces representing 7 regions, using CAWI (online survey application method), and said, "This research represents a population of 50 million people aged 18 and over."
Packaging Waste is Collected Separately from Garbage in Workplaces in the Eyes of 39 Million People
79% of the individuals participating in the research stated that packaging waste is collected separately from garbage in workplaces. Stating that this corresponds to 39 million people considering the scope of the research, Secretary General İmer said, "I evaluate this high figure as a result of the positive perception created by individuals by the recycling bins that are visibly placed in schools, hospitals, public institutions and private workplaces, especially in conjunction with the Zero Waste Regulation and the state's Zero Waste policy. It is a very important success in terms of awareness in society on this issue." İmer continued his words as follows: "On the other hand, when individuals say that waste is collected separately in workplaces, they express a passive approach without revealing how involved they are in this issue. However, if we consider that the awareness created in workplaces should result in the systematic, efficient and integrated collection and recycling of waste, there is still important work to be done in the field."
29 Million People Say They Always Collect Packaging Waste Separately at Home
The rate of those who say that they always collect packaging waste separately at home is 58%; Considering the representation rate of the participants in the research within the Turkish population, the number of people who say so corresponds to approximately 29 million. Stating that this means that at least one in three people in Turkey constantly and regularly collects packaging waste separately, Mete İmer said, "Unfortunately, this assertive result does not coincide with the latest data and observations published regarding post-consumer packaging waste, which is collected separately at the source and recycled. Some of those who answered this must have answered with the instinct of acting in accordance with the perception of individual responsibility regarding recycling, which has become a moral value in society." İmer added that it is extremely pleasing that recycling has become perceived as an individual responsibility in society.
Those who do not collect packaging waste separately indicate that there is not enough space at home to collect it, that they do not see it being collected, and that they do not know how to separate it.
When the participants of the research were asked to mark the four most important reasons why they do not collect packaging waste separately from garbage, 47% stated that there is no space at home to collect it, 47% stated that they do not see collection in their area, 44% do not know where to throw it or there is no waste bin in their area, and 24% state that they do not know how to separate it. Mete İmer said, "Among the participants in the research who reported that they do not collect packaging waste separately, this corresponds to 9.5 million people. Among the reasons for not collecting packaging waste are "lack of space to collect it at home", "they do not see that waste is collected separately in the area where they live", "they do not know where to throw the waste or there are no waste bins in the region". He said: "In this regard, the need for space to be collected at home can be minimized by applying the dual collection method; in fact, the volume produced as waste does not change; it can be recycled and recycled." "The same volume is divided into two to be compostable. The lack of collection in the region and the lack of sufficient waste containers are related to the financial and managerial organization of the work by the municipality and relevant institutions. Our suggestion for this is the Extended Producer Responsibility system in cooperation with municipalities, which is successfully implemented in the world," he said.
20 Million People Report That They Have Difficulty Using Recycling Bins and that the Images and Explanations on the Boxes Are Confusing
When using recycling bins in social environments such as cafes, restaurants, cinemas, etc., the rate of those who stated that the explanations on the boxes were sufficient and that they did not have difficulty was 59%, while the rate of those who reported that they had difficulty was 41%. Considering the representativeness of the perception survey, approximately 20 million people who have difficulties state that the explanations on the boxes are confusing. Secretary General of ÇEVKO Foundation said, "We think that this result of the perception research should be taken into consideration by the authorities. In order for recycling to become a social habit, it should appeal to everyone regardless of their education level, the waste collection and collection system should be simple, and the visuals and explanations placed on the recycling bins should be understandable. The Zero Waste discourse has helped create a general awareness in the society, but the current Zero Waste Regulation is too complex, especially in terms of the accumulation and collection system and the diversity of waste bins."
The primary behaviors that individuals care about in terms of environmental impact are using water carefully and choosing energy-saving and recyclable products
The perception research also identified the behaviors that individuals pay most attention to within the scope of environmental impact. Accordingly, the seven behaviors that the participants care most about and their percentages are as follows: Using water carefully (63%), preferring A-class products in white goods (51%), preferring recyclable products (48%), preferring products containing less chemicals in cleaning products (46%), not consuming textiles, food and other products more than necessary (44%), preferring organic foods (37%), choosing public transportation considering the impact on the environment (33%).
Work on the development of children, protection of forests and improving the living conditions of stray animals emerged as the most supported areas
In the GREEN DOT Perception Survey, the five areas that individuals support most within the scope of environmental impact are as follows, together with their percentages: Studies that will contribute to the development of children (44%), studies to protect forests (43%), studies to improve the living conditions of stray animals (43%), studies to help the poor (41%), studies to prevent sea pollution (40%).
Secretary General İmer said that the GREEN DOT Perception Survey shows that the behaviors that individuals care about and the areas they support within the scope of environmental impact are compatible with the environmental trends emerging in the world today. He concluded his words by saying, "We think that these choices made by individuals are indicators of the problems created by the climate crisis and the transition to a circular economy. However, we need to be more aware and take action about the climate crisis."
Imprint of the Research
“GREEN DOT Perception Research” was conducted by ZENNA Corporate Brand Management Research and Consultancy for the ÇEVKO Foundation.
Within the scope of the research, it was aimed to reveal consumer attitudes and behaviors regarding packaging waste, consumers' sensitivity to the issue in grocery shopping, and their perceptions of brands with the GREEN DOT sign. The research was carried out in April 2024 by interviewing 1,000 people in 26 provinces representing 7 regions, including people aged 18 and over, among the general population of Turkey, using the CAWI (Online Survey Application Method) method.
Due to the online (CAWI) interview method within the scope of the research, the rate of DE SES and the population over the age of 65 was kept below what it should be. This means that the population of 18 years and over in Turkey is represented by 50 million instead of 65 million according to official figures. The research represents 50 million people aged 18 and over among the general public in Türkiye.
