15 Nov 2021

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality has undertaken another exemplary environmental project for Türkiye. A facility was established in Çiğli Harmandalı, where plant waste from parks and gardens is converted into organic fertilizer. Preparations are continuing to establish two similar facilities with larger capacities in Bornova, Işıkkent and Çeşme.

In line with Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer's policy of utilizing waste as raw material and bringing it into the economy, another environmental project that will set an example for Türkiye has started in Izmir. Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, which separates domestic solid waste and converts it into organic fertilizer and electrical energy in Harmandalı Regular Solid Waste Landfill and integrated solid waste management facilities established in Ödemiş and Bergama, has put another ecological facility into service at Harmandalı Regular Landfill.

A solid organic fertilizer facility was established, where vegetal waste from parks and gardens in the surrounding districts is converted into organic fertilizer. Organic fertilizers from the facility are used both in the rehabilitation area of Harmandalı Regular Landfill and in landscaping applications in the parks and gardens of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality. The Metropolitan Municipality will establish two similar facilities with larger capacities in Bornova Işıkkent and Çeşme.

Contribution to both economy and environment

Harmandalı Solid Waste Organic Fertilizer Facility serves as a facility where organic fertilizer will be produced 24 hours a day with bioreactor systems. Vegetable waste from parks, housing estates, apartments and gardens in the surrounding districts is turned into organic fertilizer in this facility. In this way, environmental pollution caused by waste and pest breeding problems are prevented.

20 tons of fertilizer is produced per month

The facility includes a product reception area, a pre-treatment unit where separation, shredding, grinding and mixing will be done, bioreactor systems that provide biological degradation, screening-cooling and a final product stock area. Vegetable wastes are processed in completely closed reactor systems and turned into organic fertilizer. There is no odor problem and no environmental pollution. The capacity of the facility will be increased in stages.

Turns into organic fertilizer in 24 hours

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Waste Management Department Energy Systems Engineer Semih Gülşen stated that 20 tons of organic fertilizer is obtained from the facility per month and said: "We shrink the park garden, pine, pruning and grass waste coming from the surrounding districts, separate them into certain categories and transfer them to the bioreactor system. By giving enzymes to the bioreactor, we turn green waste into organic fertilizer in 24 hours at a certain temperature. Our İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer said, 'Another "As the Waste Management Department, we will continue to support sustainable energy, agriculture and soil on this path that we have embarked on with the vision of 'an agriculture is possible'."
