UN Global Compact Climate Target Acceleration Program Started in Turkey

UN Global Compact is implementing the "Climate Ambition Accelerator (CAA)" to accelerate companies' practices in combating climate change and to provide a road map for companies to determine science-based emission reduction targets. The program, which will be implemented in 25 countries, started in Turkey. 19 companies from Turkey are participating in the program, which brings together online academy training and workshops and includes approximately 450 companies from all over the world. With the program, which will last until December 2021, participants will have access to global best practices, learning opportunities from each other, capacity building sessions and academy training.

The Climate Target Acceleration Program, which will be carried out simultaneously in 25 countries by UN Global Compact, the world's largest multi-stakeholder sustainability platform with 12 thousand signatories, has started in Turkey. The program, which is planned to end in December 2021, aims to provide participating companies with the necessary knowledge and skills in the processes of determining science-based emission targets that are compatible with the 1.5°C target. The Climate Target Acceleration Program will also provide a road map for companies to create the strategies they will need to transition to "net zero".

Companies of different sizes and sectors will participate in the program; Akis Gyo, Anadolu Efes, Bantboru, Çimsa, Egemet, Elif Plastik, Kazan Soda, Koç Holding, Kordsa, Mavi Giyim, Originn, Penti, Tekfen Holding, TOYO Matbaa, Turkey Industrial Development Bank (TSKB), Turkey Development and Investment Bank, Yaşar Holding, Yorglass and Zorlu Enerji will participate.

Global Compact Turkey Board Member and Environmental Working Group Co-Chair Servet Yıldırım, who made the opening speech of the program, said, "It makes us hopeful to see the determination of our companies to take concrete steps in the fight against climate change by being included in this program. Undoubtedly, the fight against climate change cannot be postponed. As the private sector, we must take our place in this fight; we must take concrete steps very quickly and reconstruct our business models and company strategies." he said.

The program offers two different contents: basic and advanced.

Thanks to the program, which offers differentiated content for SMEs and large companies regarding the Science-Based Targets setting methodology, companies will be able to follow online academy sessions containing technical information, build capacity with workshops, participate in high-level meetings between stakeholders at the country level, and create the road map they need to determine science-based emission reduction targets to reach net zero by 2050.
