EUROPEAN COMMISSION AIMS TO INCREASE CIRCULARITY IN THE AUTOMOTIVE SECTOR
The European Commission has prepared a new regulation that prioritizes circularity in the design, production and waste management processes of vehicles.
With the prepared regulation, a net income of 1.8 billion euros is expected to be obtained by 2035. The income generated will be provided by increasing employment and recycling critical raw materials, and by encouraging sustainable and circular business models.
Within the scope of the regulation, it will be mandatory for the plastics used in the construction of the vehicles to be obtained from recycled materials at a certain rate. In addition, at least 25 percent of the plastics used in vehicle production will consist of recycled materials, and 25 percent of this amount will be obtained from plastics recycled from vehicles that have completed their useful life.
Automobile manufacturers will be responsible for providing clear and detailed instructions on how to replace and disassemble vehicle parts, with the aim of increasing circularity in the design and production processes of vehicles.
On the other hand, it is aimed to develop "Extended Producer Liability" regulations specifically for the automotive industry. In this way, it is aimed to ensure that producers assume more responsibility and participate more effectively in waste management processes.
The scope of regulation is planned to be gradually expanded to include vehicles such as motorcycles, trucks and buses.
With the implementation of the regulation, significant environmental impacts will be achieved, especially the annual reduction of 12.3 million tons of CO2 emissions by 2035. In addition, by increasing the recovery of critical raw materials, Europe's external dependence on critical raw materials will be reduced and a sustainable supply chain will be created.
The regulation was submitted to the European Parliament and the Council for consideration.
