Climate Crisis Concern Grows Increasingly in the Business World

Deloitte Turkey Risk Consultancy Director Murat Günaydın said, "Although the business world is concerned about the threats posed by the climate crisis, it may have difficulties in quickly integrating sustainability-related steps into its processes."

The 2022 CxO (Chief Experience Officer) Sustainability Report prepared by Deloitte revealed that the concern in the business world about the climate crisis is increasing.

According to the Deloitte statement, more than 2 thousand CxOs from 21 countries participated in the research prepared to examine the concerns and actions of senior executives and companies on climate change and sustainability.

According to the report, 89 percent of senior executives or CxOs agreed that there is a climate crisis, while 63 percent of participants stated that their organizations are extremely concerned about the climate crisis.

The effects of climate change occupy a large place on the agenda of managers. 79 percent of CxOs believe the world is at a turning point in responding to climate change. This rate has increased by 20 percent compared to the survey 8 months ago. Despite growing concerns, 88 percent of CxOs are optimistic that the negative effects of climate change on the world can be limited if action is taken quickly. This rate was at 63 percent in the previous research.

97 percent of participants stated that climate change has already negatively affected their organizations. 50 percent emphasized that their operations (business models, supply chains, etc.) were negatively affected by this situation. 81 percent of the participants stated that they were personally affected by the climate events experienced in the last 12 months (extreme heat, increasing storms, forest fires, etc.). Participants stated that regulators, shareholders, consumers and employees are also pressing for action against the climate crisis.

Bold steps are needed by the business world

Two-thirds of CxOs stated that their companies use more sustainable materials and increase their energy efficiency, while more than half said they use energy-efficient, climate-friendly machines, equipment and technologies. While most of the participants emphasized that they reduced air transportation, they also noted that they provided climate change training to their employees.

Despite all these positive steps, CxOs stated that they had problems adding climate awareness to their company's culture and convincing their senior managers to engage in a more meaningful transformation.

Deloitte Turkey Risk Consultancy Director and Sustainability Leader Murat Günaydın, whose views are included in the statement, stated that no step to be taken against the climate crisis is unimportant and said, "However, some decisions and actions to be taken on this issue may be more important than others. Although the business world is concerned about the threats posed by the climate crisis, it may have difficulties in quickly integrating sustainability-related steps into its processes. At this point, bold steps are needed for the business world. There is still time to limit the damage caused by climate change. At this point, it is time to prove that we are ready to take on the challenge." came.” He said.
