ÇEVKO Foundation Recycling Week Message: "The Road to a Sustainable World Begins in Our Homes"

17 Apr 2023

In the message published by ÇEVKO Foundation for World Recycling Week, which brings together the identities of an expert industrial initiative and an active non-governmental organization, it was emphasized that recycling, which is of great importance for a sustainable world, is a multi-stakeholder process covering different segments of the society and that the starting point of the process is individuals.

ÇEVKO Foundation, which was established in 1991 as a voluntary industry initiative to contribute to sustainable development focused on recycling and has gained the identity of a non-governmental organization touching the masses with its work that has been continuing with increasing momentum for 31 years, is one of the institutions that has assumed intellectual leadership in our country on the issues of "fighting against the climate crisis" and "transition to a circular economy", especially in recent years.

Stating that all individuals have a responsibility for a sustainable world, ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer said, "We should not forget that wastes are actually resources. Wastes are put into the recycling process and used as raw materials in the production of new products. Thanks to the use of recycled wastes as raw materials, energy is saved; natural resources such as water, trees, oil, etc. are protected. Production costs decrease, new job opportunities are created, thus contributing to the country's economy. Above all, the future is "The starting point of this value chain is us as individuals and our positive behaviors. On the other hand, it is among our responsibilities to ensure that waste is reused as raw material, that is, to collect our waste separately in our homes for recycling. Every individual who is sensitive to these issues can voluntarily contribute to the spread of these positive behaviors in their environment, starting from their closest ones," he said.

Mete İmer stated that ÇEVKO Foundation, which is the representative of Extended Producer Responsibility, has ensured the collection and recycling of approximately 7.5 million tons of packaging waste in the 15 years from 2005 to 2020, as Turkey's first authorized organization in its field, and said, “Our foundation has carried out this work with the expanded producer responsibility model with the financial support of thousands of economic enterprises to fulfill their legal responsibilities. With the new regulations that came into force in the field of waste management, 2020 in our country.” "After 2017, the public authority took over the responsibility for the management of packaging and other waste, and economic enterprises began to pay a recycling contribution fee to the state," he said.

Mete İmer stated that recycling is a cultural issue that concerns different segments of the society and said, "As ÇEVKO Foundation, since the day we were founded, we have been carrying out communication activities to popularize the recycling culture and to ensure that the majority of the society acquires the habit of separate collection at the source, whether through the training of trainers in schools, door-to-door information at homes and workplaces, large events with large crowds or through the media. Collecting the packaging wastes of the products we use in our daily lives separately and throwing them to the packaging waste points in our neighborhoods is simple but effective." "Individuals who do not have a waste point in their neighborhood can contact their municipality on this issue," he continued.

Mete İmer added that ÇEVKO Digital Solutions, developed within the ÇEVKO Foundation, make the lives of municipalities, public institutions and commercial enterprises easier in this regard, and said, "ÇEVKO Digital Solutions, with its many features that are innovative, easy to install and can be developed according to requirements, are capable of providing a holistic digital solution to the waste management processes of a wide range of businesses such as shopping malls, chain markets, hotels, gas stations, etc.

Mete İmer invited everyone who wants to get more information about the choices that will contribute to sustainable living, who wants to be a part of activities that will help raise public awareness on this issue and spread awareness, to become a ÇEVKO Foundation Volunteer, and continued his words as follows: "Expanding ÇEVKO Volunteers is among the issues we will prioritize in the coming period. In addition to active volunteer participation in our events, everyone who wants to set an example for their environment regarding individual contribution to sustainable waste management, take part in our awareness-raising activities and make a volunteer contribution to a sustainable world can visit our Foundation's website.
