ÇEVKO Foundation has been continuing its work with increasing momentum for 30 years, with the aim of developing the sustainable recycling system it pioneered and increasing the separate collection of packaging waste at the source. This time, the topic of the online interviews prepared by ÇEVKO Foundation Climate Change and Sustainability Working Group in cooperation with the EGD Global Warming Congress Committee was "Consumer Responsibility Against Climate Change".
The "30th Anniversary Conversations" project of ÇEVKO Foundation, which is among the organizations that provide intellectual leadership on Climate Change and Circular Economy, is carried out in cooperation with the Economic Journalists Association (EGD). In the conversation moderated by EGD President Celal Toprak, ÇEVKO Foundation Executive Board Chairman Figan Soykut, Environmental Volunteer Artist Zeliha Sunal and ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer discussed the issue from different dimensions.
At the opening of the online meeting, EGD President Celal Toprak emphasized that individuals and consumers also have a responsibility in the fight against the climate crisis, and gave the first word to ÇEVKO Foundation Secretary General Mete İmer.
Mete İmer touched upon the importance of the Paris Climate Agreement at the beginning of his speech. He explained that the main objectives of the Paris Climate Agreement are to keep the global average temperature increase at most 2°C above the pre-industrial level and to continue efforts to limit this increase to 1.5°C, to increase the ability to adapt to the negative effects of climate change and to provide a consistent financial flow to achieve these goals.
Stating that the climate crisis we are experiencing is caused by human activities, Mete İmer said, "If we do not take precautions against this threat, there are risks such as depletion of resources, increase in natural disasters, large waves of migration. In order not to face an uninhabitable world, all individuals have a responsibility. As individuals, we must be more sensitive in our daily lifestyles, transportation and travel habits, food consumption, energy and water saving. On the other hand, we must ensure that waste is re-evaluated as raw materials, that is, we dispose of our waste in our homes for recycling." "Collecting them separately and ensuring their recycling is also among our responsibilities," he said.
Environmental Volunteer Artist Zeliha Sunal, who was deemed worthy of the ÇEVKO Foundation Green Dot Special Award for her contributions to the work carried out to increase social awareness and spread the recycling culture on the issue of recycling, which is of great importance for the sustainable future of the world, started her words by saying, "We, the people, are the primary responsible for climate change and the ones who will suffer the consequences."
Zeliha Sunal, emphasizing that artists with large fan and follower bases have great responsibilities in spreading environmental awareness to society, said, "We must act together to avoid being left airless, thirsty and hungry. Small changes we make in our lifestyles can have great effects. It is the responsibility of all of us to be sensitive in electricity, water and food consumption and to recycle our waste."
The subject of the next meeting to be held on December 27, 2021 within the scope of the ÇEVKO Foundation 30th Anniversary Talks will be "The Responsibility of the Industry Against the Climate Crisis". Online meeting participation links will be announced by ÇEVKO Foundation and Economic Journalists Association before each meeting.
