Announcing for the first time in the world that it will recycle plastic collected from the beach and use it in the production of shampoo bottles, Head & Shoulders is taking an important step in the fight against plastic waste. At the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, Head & Shoulders announced its ambitious plan to use plastic collected from European beaches to produce shampoo bottles.
The limited edition bottles will be on sale in France in the summer of 2017. The bottles will be produced in collaboration with recycling specialist Terracycle and Suez, Europe's largest waste management company.
This announcement came after the Ellen MacArthur Foundation called on global leaders from the same stage in Davos to increase the reuse of plastic waste.
Procter & Gamble's (P&G) Vice President of Global Sustainability, Virginie Helias, said, "The Head & Shoulders recyclable shampoo bottle, produced with plastic collected from the beach, is the first in the world in the field of hair care." "It's a first step in the right direction in tackling the issues raised by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation at last year's World Economic Forum, which said there would be more plastic than fish in the oceans by 2050.
"The initiative, in which hundreds of non-governmental organizations and thousands of volunteers will participate, will focus on combating plastic waste on beaches, which is a problematic issue. Although reusing plastics collected from the marine environment is very difficult due to degradation, Head & Shoulders, together with partners in this field, have developed a technically revolutionary method by which 25% of plastic can be turned into packaging.
It is hoped that this initiative will not only contribute to keeping beaches free of plastic, but also to help consumers do their part and recycle shampoo bottles to prevent further waste from accumulating on beaches.
