Paris Declaration Opened for Signature by Mayors

27 Jan 2021

With the Paris Declaration dated December 11, 2020, signed by the Mayors of Paris and Los Angeles as an initiative of the European Council of Municipalities and Regions (CEMR), it is aimed to re-state the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement, which mayors from cities around the world signed in Paris 5 years ago, in a more assertive way. In this context, the declaration is submitted for the signature of the mayors.

With the declaration, cities re-emphasize their commitment to keep the increase in global warming within the 1.5°C target of the Paris Agreement. Adhering to the principle of partnership, it demonstrates their commitment to comply with a series of decisions to place climate action at the center of the urban life cycle of cities and all processes linked to sustainable, inclusive and participatory development.

Five years after the Paris Agreement, mayors and other local leaders are reaffirming their commitment to dramatically reduce carbon emissions by 2050 by signing the 2020 Paris Declaration. Leaders who signed the declaration specifically commit to taking urgent action, achieving climate neutrality by 2050 and involving young people in the process.

The Paris Declaration was launched by Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, CEMR and other local and regional government networks at the “Forum Zéro Carbone” event hosted by the City of Paris on December 11, 2020. Local leaders who signed the declaration via the online form will be at the center of the global “Cities Getting to Zero” campaign in the run-up to COP26, which will be held in Glasgow in November this year.

Local leaders who want to sign the Paris Declaration can fill out the online form at the link http://quq.la/29M30 until January 31, 2021.
