On World Food Day, Sütaş shared its sustainability report card with the public
Sharing the Sustainability Progress Report on October 16, World Food Day, Sütaş Sustainability Committee Chairman Duygu Yılmaz said, "By sharing our report on this important day, we wanted to support raising awareness about the transformation of the food system on the basis of sustainability and circularity. While our world is trying to combat the threats posed by global warming caused by climate change and the rapid depletion of natural resources, as the food industry, we have a responsibility to ensure that the increasing world population has access to healthy food. We believe that it contributes to the solution of these global problems; "We work with our "Farm to Table" business model, which focuses on sustainability. This model allows us to meet our consumers' expectations for naturalness and reliable food in the best possible way," he said.
Climate change, which is more effective day by day, requires all segments of society to take action, while sustainability is now among the most important agenda items of countries and companies. In this regard, the search for "sustainable food systems" is increasingly coming to the fore. With its 2022 Sustainability Progress Report published on October 16, World Food Day, Sütaş sets an important example in this field with its Farm to Table integrated business model.
“We wanted to support awareness by publishing it on World Food Day”
Yılmaz stated that they are happy to share the activities carried out in line with the 2025 targets, where Sütaş will celebrate its 50th anniversary, and its sustainability performance for 2022. He said, "We aimed to contribute to the transformation of the food system by sharing our report on this important day. Our Farm to Table business model is based on sustainability by covering the entire process of the supply chain and allows us to meet our consumers' expectations for naturalness and reliable food in the best way."
“Fighting against climate change and carbon management are among our priorities”
Fighting against climate change and carbon management were also among the priorities in 2022. Yılmaz said, "With our work, we achieved a 7 percent decrease in greenhouse gas emissions and a 10 percent decrease in our emission intensity compared to the previous year. Our most important tools in reducing our climate impact are our biogas facilities, where we obtain electricity, steam and hot water by processing the fertilizers of our farms and all the organic waste of our facilities. With the investments we made, we increased our electricity production capacity to 18.1 MWh and our thermal energy capacities to 18 MWh in 4 integrated facilities. In this way, we also captured 590 thousand tons of carbon. We saved 26 million kWh of energy between 2015 and 2022 with our energy efficiency studies; this is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 9,400 households."
Renewable energy is diversified with solar energy investments
Yılmaz said, "We decided to diversify renewable energy production in 2020 and set a 25 MWp SPP investment target. We have completed 1 MWp solar power plant (SPP) investments in our Bingöl Integrated Facility and 4.9 MWp in our Tire Integrated Facility. Our SPP feasibility and specification studies continue for our other locations."
The feed for Sütaş cows is grown in line with the principles of regenerative agriculture
Yılmaz stated that they apply the principles of regenerative agriculture with the farmers they work with under contract and said, "We are increasing the use of organic and organomineral fertilizers obtained from our biogas facilities in agricultural production in order to enrich the soil where the feed our cows eat is grown. In this way, the amount of organic matter we added to the soil increased by 43 percent in 2022 compared to 2020, reaching 43 thousand tons. Our trial studies continue to determine its effects on quality and productivity in agricultural soils." he said.
Our facilities contribute to the welfare of society in the regions where they are located
Stating that the Farm to Table business model constitutes an example of a "Regional Development Model" with its economic and social impacts, Yılmaz said, "In addition to environmental sustainability, our business model also contributes to our stakeholders socially and economically. While our investments activate many sub-sectors in the agriculture, industry and service sectors, they contribute to local development and increased social welfare in the regions we operate. In 2022, we purchased milk from more than 18 thousand milk producers and produced contracted feed crops on 33.2 thousand decares of land." "We provide support to the producers we cooperate with through contract model through training and inspections," he said.
Yılmaz also said, "In recent years, we have been working in cooperation with our stakeholders on combating plastic waste and food loss/waste. By 2022, by reducing the weight, we used approximately 2,100 tons of less plastic in our packaging and reduced our food loss to less than 1%."
Sütaş invites sustainability volunteers to review its report, which describes the work carried out in the fields of "sustainability of the environment", "health and happiness of individuals" and "development and welfare of society" in line with the 2025 targets.
