Şişecam's 2022 Sustainability Report Has Been Published
Şişecam Will Increase Renewable Energy Use by 8 Times by 2030
Şisecam, which shapes its activities in 4 continents and 14 countries with a focus on sustainability targets, has completed its 2022 sustainability report. As a result of the work carried out within the scope of sustainable and clean energy transformation, Şişecam increased its renewable energy installed capacity to 10 MWp in 2022. With this capacity increase, Şişecam produced 8 thousand 321 MW of renewable energy annually and prevented approximately 4 thousand tons of carbon emissions. Şişecam achieved energy savings of 29 million TL with these works carried out in 2022, and recycled 6.8 million cubic meters of water. Şişecam aims to increase the rate of renewable energy use in its factories by 8 times by 2030.
Continuing its production and investments with the aim of becoming one of the three largest players in the world in all areas in which it operates, Şişecam continues its efforts to reduce its carbon footprint in 4 continents and 14 countries. Şişecam, which collected all the work it carried out on sustainability last year in its 2022 Sustainability Report, also revealed its goals for a sustainable future.
Continuing its sustainable growth journey focused on creating value for the planet and all its stakeholders within the scope of the 2022-2030 CareforNext sustainability strategy, Şişecam increased its renewable energy installed capacity to 10 MWp (Megawatt peak) with the work carried out in 2022. With this capacity increase, Şişecam produced 8 thousand 321 MW (Megawatt) of renewable energy annually and prevented approximately 4 thousand tons of carbon emissions. Achieving energy savings of 29 million TL with the work carried out in 2022, Şişecam recycled 6.8 million cubic meters of water. Şişecam plans to increase the use of renewable energy in its factories 8 times by 2030.
Şişecam Chairman and Executive Member Prof. Dr. Ahmet Kırman said, "We develop strategies with the awareness of the effects of our sector on the world and humanity, and take important steps for the continuity of the planet and humanity with investments that will create long-term value. Sustainability is our most important compass in this journey." Underlining that the 2030 CareforNext strategy provides significant strength to Şişecam in its sustainable growth journey focused on value creation, Prof. Dr. Kırman said, "We continue our work with our 2050 'Zero Carbon' vision. With every step we take, we equip the Şişecam of the Future with the competencies that can meet the needs of tomorrow. In this direction, we always keep science and technology at the center as we move forward with the 'Protect the Planet', 'Strengthen Society', 'Transform Life' approaches of our CareforNext strategy."
Prof. Dr. Ahmet Kırman listed Şişecam's investments focused on sustainability as follows:
Two new investments focused on sustainability
We started 2022 with the purchase of the Italian refractory manufacturer Refel, which we carried out in order to guarantee sustainability in our production processes and investments. Immediately afterwards, we held the groundbreaking ceremony of our Hungary facility, which is our first investment in the field of glass packaging in Europe. This facility, which we will equip with technologies that reduce the carbon and water footprint, will also produce in the European market as a local manufacturer.
Increasing sustainability sensitivities in the global arena brings with it many new opportunities along with the increase in demand in the frosted glass and energy glass industry. We continue to increase our investments in the frosted glass and energy glass sector used in solar energy panels. Within the scope of this strategy, while commissioning the frosted glass furnace and operating line in our Mersin facility, we decided to increase the capacity of the second frosted glass furnace, where we will also produce energy glass in the same facility, from 180 thousand tons to 244 thousand tons annually.
Investment in Basalia technology that transforms wastewater
We will start pilot trials of Basalia Technology, which transforms organic and inorganic waste in solid-liquid-gas form into harmless substances for a more sustainable world, which we announced in 2021, first in our production facility in Mersin and then move it to the industrial area. Green and circular Basalia Bio-Cycle Technology is important for us to achieve our goals for the reuse of wastewater, which we have established under our "Protect the Planet" strategy.
Leadership model for sustainable industry
Another development that we have implemented for a sustainable future and that excites us is our business model called Plant of the Future. We aim to lead collaborations that will make the glass industry more sustainable with alternative energy sources such as electricity, hydrogen and renewable, in line with our CareforNext sustainability strategy, on the platforms we plan to create with international business partners.
Glasses that provide energy and light control
In addition to all these, we stand out with our coated and low-e glasses, which are a good solution partner to the increasing needs and norms of the planet and provide energy and light control during the renovation process of buildings. In the field of renewable energy production, we are increasing our market share in the production of high-quality glass for photovoltaic panels and glass fiber for wind turbines. We also continue our product development efforts to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy in the automotive industry.
It will transform wastewater and reduce the use of clean water
We also have important goals regarding water, which is a fundamental human right. Aware of our responsibility to future generations and our world, we achieved our goal of reusing industrial wastewater as of 2020. We aim to reduce our clean water consumption by at least 15 percent by 2030. Within the scope of our clean water and sanitation targets, we recycled 6.8 million cubic meters of water in 2022. In addition to water awareness activities, we continue our activities towards the "Zero discharge" approach and continue our processes to determine the potential of our facilities and strengthen the monitoring infrastructure.
Designs an energy efficient oven
Sisecam scientists working at our Şişecam Science, Technology and Design Center, one of the largest R&D centers in Europe, make improvements in furnaces in line with optimum production efficiency and energy efficiency with modeling and simulation-supported designs, as well as product design, and design furnaces that are critical in glass production.
Reduced water use in soda ash production in the USA
While evaluating the environmental and social benefits of all the investments we make and plan, we focus on reducing the total impact of our activities on the environment. The natural soda ash investment we made in Wyoming, USA, enabled us to reduce our carbon emission intensity and water consumption resulting from soda ash production by 50 percent. We aim to become one of the 3 largest soda ash producers in the world with the other investments we will make in this field.
It will increase the use of cullet by 35 percent
In line with the 2030 strategy, we aim to increase the external glass cullet rate we use in glass packaging production processes to at least 35 percent.
The rate of female employees will increase to 25 percent
We support gender equality for a more equitable and sharing world with our management policies that value diversity and inclusion. Today, more than 5,500 female employees represent 23 percent of our total employees. In order to increase this rate, we consider establishing inclusive facilities to make them suitable for our female employees as part of our equality policy and make the necessary investments. By 2030, we aim to create a multinational working environment, implement the Women Expression Program and increase our female employee rate to at least 25 percent.
