Our Areas of Expertise
The world's leading consumer brands L'Oréal, Nestlé, PepsiCo and Suntory Beverage & Food Europe announced the production of PET plastic bottles produced with a new technology focused entirely on endless recycling.
Jean Claude Lumaret, CEO of biotechnology solutions company Carbios, said:
"For the first time in the world, we have created food-grade transparent bottles from enzymatically recycled colored and complex plastic with the same properties as virgin PET. This is a significant innovation that can completely close the loop on PET plastic supply globally."
Carbios' solution uses enzymes from naturally occurring microorganisms to break down PET plastic and make it recyclable. This new technology enables the recycling of PET plastics that would otherwise go to waste or incineration, increasing the amount of PET that can be recycled on an industrial scale.
PepsiCo Global Vice President of Beverages Packaging Ron Khan said:
"PepsiCo is committed to building a circular economy to achieve our vision where packaging never becomes waste. We can help reduce the virgin plastic we use and, with Carbios recycling technology, keep valuable material in the circular economy, reducing waste and taking another step towards a truly closed-loop system."
L'Oréal Packaging and Development Director Jacques Playe said:
"We have been working with Carbios since 2017 to develop this first bottle made from PET derived from enzymatic recycling technology as an alternative to mechanical recycling. Today we are pleased to announce the feasibility of these bottles in the pilot phase and are pleased to be in a position to create the packaging of the future with our partners. This is a promising innovation that demonstrates our commitment to bringing more environmentally friendly packaging to the market and is part of a circularity initiative that started more than 15 years ago."
L'Oréal continues its sustainable packaging efforts with the goal of switching 100% of the plastics used in product packaging to recycled or bio-based sources by 2030.
Jean-Francois Briois, Head of Packaging Material Science and Environmental Sustainability at Nestlé Waters, said:
"It is very exciting to see that the quality of prototype bottles made from 100% colored recycled PET materials is almost the same as clear virgin PET. Thanks to our partnership with Carbios, we are able to meet the great challenge of combining quality, iconic design and sustainability. When we apply this technology on an industrial scale, we will produce high-quality rPET bottles and contribute to Nestlé's journey to reduce the use of virgin plastic."
The new technology aims to make 100% of Nestlé's packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025.
