The definition of "Green OIZ" was added to the Organized Industrial Zones Law

The Law on Amending the Organized Industrial Zones Law and Some Laws came into force after being published in the Official Gazette. The definition of "Green OIZ" was added to the Organized Industrial Zones Law.

Green OSB Certification for Environmentally Friendly and Sustainable Production

Climate change is one of the most urgent problems the world faces and requires solutions. Scientific assessments through Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports have shown that many of the worst consequences of climate change can be prevented by limiting global warming to 1.5°C.

Therefore, industries have become increasingly focused on reducing their ecological footprint while maximizing efficiency and profitability. One of the innovative solutions that attracts attention is the establishment of Green Organized Industrial Zones.

Green Organized Industrial Zones integrate environmental considerations into all aspects of operations, from resource management and waste reduction to energy efficiency, from good manufacturing practices to the use of renewable energy. Businesses operating in harmony with the natural environment in these regions support economic growth and promote social welfare.

Green Organized Industrial Zones are revolutionizing the industrial landscape by combining economic growth with environmental sustainability. Green OIZs serve as a beacon of hope that shows that it is possible to achieve economic prosperity while protecting our planet for future generations.

As of today, the number of OIZs that have been registered by our Ministry of Industry and Technology and gained legal personality has reached 353. 264 of these OIZs are in operation, and project, expropriation and construction operations are ongoing in 89 of them.

In the National Contribution Declaration submitted by our country within the framework of the Paris Agreement, which entered into force in 2016 in order to prevent climate change, a commitment was made to a 21% greenhouse gas emission reduction target as a reduction from increase, and this target was revised to 41% at COP 27.

In this context, the Ministry of Industry and Technology has put forward a program containing regulations for Organized Industrial Zones and created the Green OIZ and Green Industrial Zone Certification System together with the World Bank. While this study was being carried out, our institution provided technical support to our Ministry.

What is the Green OIZ and Green Industrial Zone Certification System Project?

The main purpose of the Green OIZ and Green Industrial Zone Certification System Project; To bring the industrial zones in our country to international standards by adopting the principle of "Continuous Development" in line with the Sustainable Development Goals. For this purpose, prerequisites and performance criteria have been defined in order to be included in the Green OIZ and Green Industrial Zone Certification System.

The aims of the Green OIZ and Green Industrial Zone Certification System preliminary criteria and performance criteria;

  • To increase the administrative and monitoring performance of Organized Industrial Zones,
  • To ensure that the environmental performance of OIZs is increased by providing sustainable tools to manage water, wastewater, waste and resources and by minimizing their environmental footprint,
  • To ensure that climate change issues and local and global impacts on the environment are addressed,
  • To ensure improvement of social performance by addressing the needs of society and employees, including labor rights and working conditions, gender, community dialogue, land acquisition and social infrastructure,
  • To ensure increased economic performance for OIZ managers and business owners.

As a result of the literature reviews and studies, our Institute and our Ministry have carried out studies on 6 preliminary criteria and 40 performance criteria to ensure that the criteria serve the purpose.

Preliminary criteria prepared for the Green OSB Certification System;

(*It is sufficient for OIZs that have these documents from another conformity assessment institution to have applied for document transfer to TSE.)

Performance criteria are evaluated under 4 main headings: OIZ Management, Economic, Environmental and Social Performance.

In addition, in order to ensure the development and improvement of OIZs with each passing year, OIZs that qualify for the title of Green OIZ by meeting the necessary qualifications from the criteria are expected to prepare an "Improvement Report" every year.

What is Green OSB Design Certificate?

In addition to all these, a Green OSB Design Certificate has been created in order to prepare the industry for green transformation, low-carbon production ecosystem and circular economy applications. Thanks to this certificate, OIZs will move forward with a sustainable infrastructure from the installation stage and will thus have an infrastructure that is more open to future developments.

Green OSB Design Certificate has been made mandatory in the Green OSB Certification system for OIZs established after 01.01.2025 and allocated additional area.

Conformity assessment is carried out by our Institute within the scope of the Green OIZ and Green Industrial Zone Certification System project.

As the Turkish Standards Institute, we will continue our efforts to support the progress of our industry towards green and sustainability.
