What Is the Climate Crisis?

Climate change refers to long-term changes in the meteorological phenomena occurring in the Earth’s atmosphere. In the past, such changes were caused by variations in solar activity or major volcanic eruptions, whereas since the 1800s, human activities, especially the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas, have become the main driver of climate change.

The burning of fossil fuels and other human activities produce emissions of gases that behave like a blanket in the lower layer of the atmosphere (the troposphere), trapping the sun’s heat, raising temperatures, and whose mechanism resembles that of a greenhouse, which is why they are called “greenhouse gases”.

The warming in the atmosphere caused by greenhouse gases not only leads to rising temperatures but also to changes in the water cycle over the oceans and to the intensification of meteorological phenomena such as storms, hurricanes and rainfall. In the long term, these changes lead to climate change.

The main “greenhouse gases” that cause climate change include carbon dioxide and methane. All greenhouse gas emissions released into the atmosphere are expressed in terms of “carbon dioxide equivalent”.

Energy, industry, transport, buildings, agriculture and land use are among the main sectors that cause greenhouse gas emissions.

Climate change leads to ocean acidification, rising ocean and sea levels due to melting glaciers, more frequent and intense heavy rainfall, flooding and inundation on land, severe drought, the spread of forest fires and significant changes in ecosystems.

The fact that climate change has turned into an “emergency” that can no longer be ignored is referred to as the “climate crisis”. Due to increasingly severe adverse changes in climate conditions, the climate crisis has come to threaten life on Earth.

What Is the Evidence That Humans Are Responsible for the Climate Crisis?

Climate scientists have shown that over the last 200 years, humans are responsible for nearly all global warming.

According to NASA, the average surface temperature of the Earth is 15°C. The average surface temperature of the Earth has risen by 1.2°C compared with the late 1800s, that is, before the industrial revolution, and it is warmer than at any time in the last 100,000 years. The last decade (2011–2020) has been the warmest period on record, and each of the last forty years has been warmer than the previous decade since 1850.

The main structural, human-induced causes behind the climate crisis are as follows:

• Intensive Use of Fossil Fuels: Coal, oil and natural gas are still the most frequently used energy sources in electricity generation, transport and heating.

• Emissions from Agriculture and Livestock: High-impact gases such as methane (CH₄) and nitrous oxide (N₂O) are released during livestock production and agricultural processes.

• Deforestation and Land-Use Change: The loss of natural sinks such as forests, which have the capacity to store carbon, increases the concentration of carbon in the atmosphere.

• Industrial and Consumption Patterns: High energy use, fast-paced production and a waste-based economy deepen the climate crisis.

What Are the Countries’ Shares in Greenhouse Gas Emissions?

Greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change come from all parts of the world and affect everyone.
However, some countries produce far more of these emissions than others. Six countries (China, the United States of America, India, the European Union, the Russian Federation and Brazil) together accounted for more than half of all global greenhouse gas emissions in 2023. By contrast, the 45 least developed countries are responsible for only 3 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions.

What Are the Consequences of the Climate Crisis?

The environmental consequences of the climate crisis include extreme weather events, rising ocean and sea levels caused by melting polar ice, water scarcity and declining biodiversity.

• Extreme Weather Events: Catastrophic storms, floods, forest fires, heatwaves and droughts have become more frequent and more destructive.

• Melting Glaciers and Rising Sea Levels: Major risks are emerging for coastal cities, while the existence of island states is under threat.

• Water Stress: Rising temperatures and decreasing groundwater resources threaten the hydrological cycle.

• Declining Biodiversity: Changes in climate are causing biodiversity loss, and some plant and animal species around the world are facing extinction.

As the frequency and severity of meteorological disasters increase worldwide, their socio-economic costs are also rising. These impacts do not only pose environmental risks; they also create social, economic and political risks of destruction.

The climate crisis can affect our health, food production, housing, security and jobs. Yield losses in agriculture threaten food security;  small farmers and economies reliant on agriculture are directly affected. People living in small island states and other developing countries are more vulnerable to climate impacts.

Because of sea-level rise, drought, fires and extreme weather events, the number of people who will die, be injured or be displaced is expected to increase. Climate-induced displacement and migration increase social tensions and the risk of international instability.

What Is the Solution to the Climate Crisis?

According to many scientists and government officials, limiting global temperature rise to no more than 1.5–2.0°C will help us avoid the worst climate impacts and preserve habitable ecosystems on Earth.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Climate Agreement include the solution-oriented actions that world governments have agreed upon under the auspices of the United Nations to achieve sustainable development and to tackle the climate crisis.

The three broad categories of action in the Paris Climate Agreement are:

1- REDUCTION of greenhouse gas emissions,

2- ADAPTATION to changing climate impacts,

3- FINANCING mitigation and adaptation efforts.

What Is Our Responsibility as Individuals?

Individuals are not only affected by this crisis; they are also active agents in the process. Consumption choices, energy use and political preferences determine the collective strength of society’s response to the climate crisis.

• Saving energy and water,

• Preferring public transport and low-carbon mobility options,

• Adopting plant-based dietary habits,

• Recycling and waste reduction,

• Civic engagement in favour of green policies

enable individuals to take action against the climate crisis. Social change begins with individual awareness. Legal regulations only gain meaning through effective implementation and societal support. Confronting this crisis means not only protecting today, but also defending the right to life of future generations

100% Recycled Pet Bottle Usage and Packaging Weight Reduction Projects

As PepsiCo, we continue our efforts to popularize the effective use of natural resources and raw material conservation in order to provide a livable World for future generations and we make our plans accordingly. With the use of 100% recyclable PET bottles and packaging weight reduction projects, we are getting closer to our targets of less natural resources and raw materials every year.

SIRMA GRUP BEVERAGES IND. AND TRADE Inc.
Project:
Sirma Ecofriendly ULW

As Danone, we are constantly pursuing lower weights in both glass bottles and PET bottles. While doing this, we also take our competitors into consideration and push the boundaries of what is technically possible. In this project, we came together with Şişecam and stated that we wanted the lightest bottle. Our 0.33L glass water bottle has decreased from 180 grams to 148 grams, with a weight reduction of almost 20%. We achieved a much more significant weight reduction in our 0.75L glass water bottle. Here we went from 430 grams to 295 grams, with a weight reduction of over 30%. Our bottles have become significantly lighter, and for this, the technologies we use in their production and the shape of our bottles had to change. But we do not keep this information to ourselves, we share it with our consumers and declare our sensitivity to the environment through our labels. In addition to the budgetary impacts of mitigations, one of the most important impacts is the environmental impact. In this way, it deserves the definition of Ecofriendly. In terms of carbon footprint, glass is a packaging that puts a little more strain on our planet. It causes the release of much more carbon dioxide both during production and during empty or full transfer. We have ensured that much less carbon dioxide is emitted with our Sırma Ecofriendly bottle. This project not only increases Sırma's brand power, but also makes water in glass packaging more affordable for a wider range of consumers.

Sustainable and Digital Zero Waste Management System

Rapid urbanization and population growth in parallel with technological developments and industrialization in the world are rapidly increasing the pressure of human activities on the environment. While this process makes the more intensive use of natural resources in production activities inevitable, the wastes generated with the ever-increasing consumption trend are reaching levels that threaten the environment and human health due to both their quantity and content.

As Anadolu Isuzu, we aim to minimize our environmental impacts in all our operational activities with a sustainable production perspective. Within the scope of the Environmental Management System, maximum recovery of waste is achieved by digitizing the waste bins in office areas and production lines; Non-recyclable waste generation is minimized. Based on the Zero Waste Regulation, studies on the zero waste management system, which will ensure the protection of the sustainable environment and human health through the effective management of raw materials and natural resources, are continuing.

Our sustainable and digital zero waste management system includes a large organizational structure that separates waste at its source, reduces it, tracks it with an inventory system, collects and transports it. With the Anadolu Isuzu Zero Waste Management system project, our amount of hazardous waste per vehicle has been reduced by 52% in the last 3 years. With the implementation of the Zero Waste System, 96% of our total waste amount is recycled.

Scrapped materials are sent to recycling facilities and used for energy, labor, etc. It is turned into a reusable raw material by incurring expenses. In this regard, one of our employees asked "Do You Have an Idea?" The idea of making walkers for disabled dogs, submitted to the platform, was evaluated and the most suitable prototype was determined and a walker design was created, accompanied by veterinarians, for our volunteer friends who wanted to work on the project within the company. The project was implemented in cooperation with Manisa Metropolitan Municipality and MOSTEM Vocational High School volunteer students. In line with the demands from Türkiye and abroad, the demand for 30 walkers was met. Our project has been appreciated and awarded by many platforms.

These Wastes Write Code

In the project we implemented to encourage the recycling of e-waste and raise awareness, we collect and recycle e-waste with e-waste bins we place in different parts of Turkey and open coding classes in schools with the income we earn from recycling e-waste.

We developed the This Waste Writes Code sustainability project to contribute to the solution of the e-waste problem and raise awareness in line with our environmental goals. In June 2019, in the first phase of the project, we started collecting e-waste from our employees' homes. We then recycled these e-wastes through Akademi Çevre, a licensed recycling company. We donated the economic income obtained from the recycling of e-waste to the Vodafone Foundation to open a coding class for children who do not have access to the digital world. In the second phase, we expanded the project to our dealers and integrated it into the Vodafone Digitalization Truck that will travel throughout Turkey. In the third phase, we invited our ecosystem, business partners and corporate customers to the project. We provide videos, digital content, e-waste collection boxes and communication materials that provide information about e-waste to our partners who want to participate in the project. Employees of our project partners bring their e-waste to the e-waste bin at their location to support our project. They not only support the creation of coding classes, but also raise awareness about recycling and e-waste.

Project:
MonoCorr Boiler Box

Mondi Group, which we are under the corrugated cardboard solutions business unit, acts with this perspective in all its operations.

Mondi believes there is no single path to sustainability. With its EcoSolutions approach that serves the circular economy, it is interested in finding the most sustainable and appropriate solution for its customers by offering solutions that use paper if possible and plastic if necessary. Mondi is guided by three actions to develop packaging with sustainability in mind: Replace, Reduce, Recycle.

Warmhaus used EPS foam when packaging its combi boilers, which has a low recycling rate and usually ends up in landfills after being thrown away. Mondi created a 100% recyclable solution for Warmhaus, which was looking for an environmentally friendly packaging solution that would meet the needs of its domestic and export customers as well as its own sustainability goals.

The flat parts of the MonoCorr Box take up 94% less space during transportation and storage than the EPS foam parts. With its compact structure, the size of the box decreases by 6% and allows 20% more products to be stacked on each transport pallet. Corrugated cardboard protectors replacing EPS foam reduce the CO2 footprint by 57%.

Designed by taking the Green Deal as a role model, MonoCorr Box is one of the leading examples of an environmentally friendly alternative in the sectors where white goods and EPS packaging are used. It is entitled to receive this award with its potential to be widespread in different product groups.
