TOFAŞ, the Turkish automotive company whose foundations were laid in 1968, implements and develops lean and proactive environmental and energy management systems in its product, production and service activities within the framework of the principle of sustainable development.
TOFAŞ has achieved the first ISO 14001 Environmental Management System certification in the automotive industry and uses the World Class Manufacturing-WCM (World Class Manufacturing) methodology, which is an integrated system with all FIAT factories in the world.
Our basic principle is "not to purify, but not to pollute at all" in order to achieve the goal of 0 waste / 0 loss. For this purpose, as stated in our environmental policy, "we perceive all kinds of waste disposal as a loss of natural resources and develop methods to prevent pollution at its source."
TOFAŞ reduced the amount of production waste per vehicle by 11% in 2015 compared to 2012, thanks to its Sustainable Waste Management System and 5R Waste Reduction Practices. In line with the Strategic Planning studies carried out at TOFAŞ, the production waste reduction target for 2020 is 15% compared to 2015. In this regard, TOFAŞ continues its work for the purpose of continuous improvement, and numerous projects have been carried out for waste reduction, and waste generation is reduced every year.
TOFAŞ evaluates Waste Management as an integrated system, systematically manages the collection, transportation, storage and recovery activities, starting from the use of each material, and carries out studies for continuous improvement.
Abdi İbrahim continues its improvement journey, which started in 1912 and has been continuing for 104 years, with the responsibility of raising the bar a little higher every day, with the leadership of the sector for 14 years. While continuing its activities, it sees the environment as a legacy borrowed from future generations and acts accordingly.
In all its processes, it prioritizes the protection of the environment and the effective use of natural resources. It develops and implements savings projects together with its employees. It uses technologies that reduce its waste to zero. With effective waste management, it tries to manage its waste in the most beneficial way for the environment and the future. With effective waste management policies in Abdi İbrahim production facilities, recyclable waste was reduced by 32% despite a 1% change in production amount between 2012 and 2015.
Thanks to the environmental training, the savings projects suggested by the employees were implemented and a total of 1,196,487 kWh of electricity, 128,277 m3 of natural gas, 46,572 m3 of water were saved, and 1956 kg. 951 kg with the use of chemicals. hazardous waste, 955 kg of plastic waste and 9797 kg. The amount of paper waste has been reduced. With the water savings realized, the water needs of 3105 houses for a month and 257 houses for a year; With electricity saving efforts, the annual energy needs of a campus of 1000 people were met. By using MBR (Membrane Bio Reactor) technology in the wastewater treatment plant, sewage sludge waste was reduced to zero and the effluent quality was improved by 50%.
In recent years, greenhouse gases have increased as a result of the use of fossil fuels, causing global warming. One of the biggest priorities of our factory is to be able to deliver the products we produce to the consumer without giving up PepsiCo Values. Carrying out our activities without harming nature and the environment, using our natural resources effectively and minimizing our waste is Tarsus Factory's commitment to the environment.
From this perspective, in order to leave a clean environment to future generations by producing our chips with green energy, alternative energy is obtained by breaking down the organic wastes (potatoes, chips, starch, corn) released as a result of our production activities in the anaerobic digester to obtain biogas and converting the resulting biogas into electrical energy in gas engines. In this way, 45% of our factory's energy consumption is covered, and at the same time, the fermented waste with high mineral content, which is released as a result of the recycling of waste, is used as organic fertilizer in the fields in the villages near our factory, reducing the budget allocated for fertilizer by reducing the rate of chemical fertilizer use of our farmers, and supporting sustainable, environmentally friendly agriculture by reducing the use of chemical fertilizers by 30% by raising the awareness of the farmers in our region on issues such as unconscious and uncontrolled use of synthetic (chemical) fertilizer by explaining the benefits of using organic fertilizer. Apart from its profit, it has been its best outcome in terms of social responsibility.
Şişecam Glass Packaging, Şişecam's subsidiary operating in the glass packaging industry, produces designed glass packaging in various volumes and colors for the food, beverage, pharmaceutical and cosmetics sectors. Şişecam Glass Packaging, which has a total production capacity of 2.3 million tons/year with 3 facilities in Turkey and 7 facilities abroad, is Turkey's largest and the fourth largest glass packaging manufacturer in the world and Europe.
Şişecam Glass Packaging is one of the first companies in our country to adapt the principle of sustainability to production by starting to use recycled glass as a raw material in the 1970s.
By implementing the "Glass Again" project in 2011, Şişecam Glass Packaging aims to improve our country's glass packaging waste collection infrastructure, create recycling awareness in society, and increase the capacity and capabilities of recycling facilities.
With the "Glass Again Glass" project, one of Turkey's most comprehensive sustainability and social responsibility projects, 203 thousand primary school students were trained on glass recycling by the end of 2015, and approximately 13 thousand glass money banks were given to municipalities within the scope of cooperation with 134 district municipalities in 21 provinces.
Thanks to the glass recycled as of the end of 2015; Carbon emissions equivalent to removing 208 thousand cars from traffic were prevented, and energy savings were achieved to meet the heating and hot water needs of 24 thousand residences. Aiming to transition to a "recycling society" by creating a social behavioral change, Şişecam Glass Packaging will continue to work to ensure that our country sets a worldwide example in glass recycling.
